Kingdom Academy of the Arts

Pioneer Days

June and November are Pioneer Months at Kingdom Academy. Students may come dressed in pioneer clothing, and they will participate in all the activities as though they were pioneers. The day will begin with a devotion and story telling time and end with a ride in a covered wagon.

Below is a list of some of the activites that will be available during the course of the day. This is not a complete list, as many activities and guest presenters not listed are always a part of the day. Participants are invited to participate in hands-on activities presented throughout the day.

  • Apple Cider: students will press their own glass of cider on an old-fashioned cider press (November sessions only).

  • Whittling: students will select a wood carving project. This project may have to be completed at home depending on the level of difficulty chosen by the participant.

  • Corn Sheller: shell corn on an antique corn sheller and feed the chickens your own cracked, shelled corn.

  • Corn Husk Dolls: create your own version of a pioneer doll.

  • Candle-Dipping: dip taper candles over an open fire.

  • Wood Chopping: chop and gather the firewood from the woods.

  • Open Hearth Cooking: sample pioneer recipes.

  • Soap Carving: a great carving project for the very youngest to the very eldest.

  • Quilting: students will make their own quilted pillow.

  • Building Project: Wood construction.

  • Wash Board: wash clothes on a washboard with homemade soap.

  • Fishing: make your own pole and catch your lunch!

  • Farm Chores: feed and care for the animals.

  • Homemade Ice Cream: hand-cranked, the old fashioned way.

  • Wood Burning: use the sun and a magnifying glass.

  • Butchering: Learn the skills to harvest your own meat (fish, chicken, or pork).

  • Braided Rugs: try your hand at braiding a pioneer rug.

  • Stone Masonry: learn how to lay up a stone chimney.

  • Weave: weave on a cardboard or table loom.

  • Spin: using the wool sheared at the spring camp, learn to spin on your own drop spindle.

"Many other stations not listed are also set up for your pleasure. The list depends on the season and availability of the craftsmen. Some of the possibilities in the past have been a blacksmith, a carpenter, basket weaver, spinner, leather craftsman, fisherman, quilter, and more."

This camp is offered the following Fridays in June 2008-13th, 20th, and 27th; and Fridays in November, 2008-7th, 14th and 21st.
